  1. Normal Flora:

    • Many Actinomyces species are part of the normal microbial flora in the oral cavity, gastrointestinal tract, and genital tract of humans. In these settings, they contribute to the balance of the microbiota and may have beneficial roles.
  2. Pathogenic Potential:

    • While Actinomyces species are generally commensal, some can become opportunistic pathogens. Actinomyces species can cause infections, most notably actinomycosis. Actinomycosis is a chronic suppurative and granulomatous infection that can occur in various body sites, including the cervicofacial area, thorax, abdomen, and pelvis.
  3. Actinomycosis:

    • Actinomycosis is characterized by the formation of abscesses, draining sinuses, and the presence of characteristic sulfur granules in the affected tissues. The condition often arises due to disruption of mucosal barriers, allowing Actinomyces to invade deeper tissues. Cervicofacial actinomycosis is one of the more common forms.
  4. Dental Health:

    • Actinomyces species are commonly found in dental plaque and can be involved in dental caries and periodontal diseases. Maintaining good oral hygiene is important to prevent the overgrowth of potentially pathogenic bacteria.
  5. Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID):

    • In the genital tract, Actinomyces species have been associated with pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), particularly in women with intrauterine devices (IUDs). This is considered a rare complication.
  6. Endocarditis:

    • Actinomyces species have been implicated in infective endocarditis, particularly in individuals with pre-existing heart valve abnormalities.
  7. Treatment:

    • Actinomycosis is typically treated with prolonged courses of antibiotics, often involving penicillin or other beta-lactam antibiotics. Surgical drainage and debridement may be necessary in severe cases.

Lab Reporting

Different labs use different software to read the sample. See this post for more details.
One lab may say you have none, another may say you have a lot! - This may be solely due to the software they are using to estimate.
We deem lab specific values using values from the KM method for each specific lab to be the most reliable.
