Mycoplasma Species: Mesoplasma is related to the genus Mycoplasma, and some Mycoplasma species are known to cause human infections. Mycoplasma pneumoniae, for example, is a common cause of atypical pneumonia and respiratory infections.
Respiratory Infections: Mycoplasma species, including those closely related to Mesoplasma, are often associated with respiratory tract infections. These infections can range from mild respiratory symptoms to more severe conditions, such as pneumonia.
Genital Infections: Some Mycoplasma species are associated with genital tract infections. Mycoplasma genitalium, for instance, can cause urethritis and has been implicated in other reproductive tract infections.
Extracellular Parasites: Mollicutes, including Mycoplasma species, are considered extracellular parasites because they lack a cell wall and are dependent on host cells for certain nutrients. This characteristic contributes to their ability to evade the host immune system and may influence their pathogenicity.
Antibiotic Susceptibility: Mycoplasma species are often susceptible to certain antibiotics, such as macrolides and tetracyclines. However, antibiotic resistance can be a concern, and susceptibility patterns may vary among different species.
