  1. Neisseria meningitidis: This bacterium is perhaps the most well-known member of the Neisseriaceae family. It can cause meningococcal meningitis, a serious infection of the membranes (meninges) surrounding the brain and spinal cord. Meningococcal meningitis can lead to symptoms such as fever, headache, stiff neck, sensitivity to light, and confusion, and it can progress rapidly, potentially leading to death if not treated promptly.

  2. Neisseria gonorrhoeae: Another important member of the Neisseriaceae family, N. gonorrhoeae, is the bacterium responsible for gonorrhea, a sexually transmitted infection (STI). Gonorrhea can lead to symptoms such as painful urination, abnormal genital discharge, and in some cases, complications such as pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) in women or epididymitis in men. If left untreated, gonorrhea can lead to serious health problems, including infertility and increased susceptibility to HIV infection.

  3. Other Neisseria species: While N. meningitidis and N. gonorrhoeae are the most well-known pathogens in this family, other Neisseria species can also cause infections, although they are less common. These infections might include urinary tract infections (UTIs), septicemia (bloodstream infections), and respiratory tract infections.

  4. Commensal species: Some Neisseria species are part of the normal microbiota of the human body, particularly in the respiratory tract and the genitourinary tract. While they generally do not cause disease in healthy individuals, under certain circumstances, such as immunocompromised states or disruptions in the normal microbiota, they may become opportunistic pathogens and cause infections.

Lab Reporting

Different labs use different software to read the sample. See this post for more details.
One lab may say you have none, another may say you have a lot! - This may be solely due to the software they are using to estimate.
We deem lab specific values using values from the KM method for each specific lab to be the most reliable.
