Legionnaires' Disease: The primary health impact associated with Legionellales, particularly Legionella pneumophila, is the development of Legionnaires' disease. This is a severe form of pneumonia that can lead to respiratory failure and other serious complications.
Transmission: Legionella bacteria are typically transmitted to humans through the inhalation of water droplets or aerosols containing the bacteria. Common sources include air conditioning systems, hot tubs, cooling towers, and water systems in large buildings.
Risk Groups: Legionnaires' disease is more likely to affect individuals with weakened immune systems, older adults, and those with underlying health conditions. Smoking, chronic lung disease, and certain medical treatments can increase the risk of infection.
Pontiac Fever: In addition to Legionnaires' disease, some Legionella infections can cause a milder illness known as Pontiac fever. Pontiac fever is a self-limiting flu-like illness that does not affect the lungs.
Environmental Habitat: Legionella bacteria are naturally found in aquatic environments, but they can proliferate and pose a risk to human health when they contaminate human-made water systems.
