Symbiobacteriaceae Details: NCBI 543349, gram-negative or unknown [family]

| Clostridiales Family XVIII. Incertae Sedis| Symbiobacteriaceae| Symbiobacteriaceae Shiratori-Takano et al. 2014

  1. Foodborne Pathogen: Listeria monocytogenes is a foodborne pathogen that can cause a serious illness called listeriosis. The bacteria are often found in soil, water, and vegetation. Unlike many other bacteria, Listeria can grow at refrigerator temperatures, making it a concern for food safety.

  2. Listeriosis: Listeriosis is an infection caused by consuming food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. The severity of illness can vary, but it can be particularly dangerous for certain groups, including pregnant women, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems. Symptoms of listeriosis may include fever, muscle aches, gastrointestinal symptoms, and, in severe cases, meningitis.

  3. Pregnancy Risks: Pregnant women are at an increased risk of severe outcomes if infected with Listeria, as the bacteria can cross the placenta and cause infections in the fetus. This can lead to miscarriage, stillbirth, premature birth, or life-threatening infections in newborns.

  4. Immunocompromised Individuals: People with weakened immune systems, such as those undergoing chemotherapy or with certain medical conditions, are more susceptible to severe forms of listeriosis. In these individuals, the infection can lead to septicemia (blood infection) or meningitis.

  5. Contaminated Foods: Listeria monocytogenes can be present in a variety of foods, including raw and smoked seafood, unpasteurized dairy products, deli meats, and ready-to-eat refrigerated foods. Controlling food safety practices, proper cooking, and hygiene are crucial for preventing Listeria contamination.

Lab Reporting

Different labs use different software to read the sample. See this post for more details.
One lab may say you have none, another may say you have a lot! - This may be solely due to the software they are using to estimate.
We deem lab specific values using values from the KM method for each specific lab to be the most reliable.
