Oral Health: Selenomonas species are among the numerous bacteria present in the oral microbiome. The composition of the oral microbiome can influence oral health, and imbalances in the microbial community can contribute to conditions such as periodontal disease and dental caries.
Gut Microbiota: Selenomonas species are also part of the gut microbiota. The gut microbiota plays a crucial role in digestion, nutrient absorption, and overall gut health. Some bacteria, including those in the Veillonellaceae family, are involved in the fermentation of dietary fibers and the production of short-chain fatty acids.
Disease Associations: While Selenomonas is generally considered a normal part of the human microbiota, certain species or strains may be associated with infections or diseases under specific circumstances. Research on the pathogenic potential of different Selenomonas species is ongoing.
